Capus Miller Waynick (1889-1986), born in Rockingham County, N.C., was the son of Joshua James Newton and Anna (Moore) Waynick. He attended the University of North Carolina, and he married Elizabeth McBee in 1915. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I and began his political career as a member of the North Carolina House in 1931. Albert Coates, founder and long-time director of the Institute of Government at the University of North Carolina, was born in Johnston County, N.C., in 1896 and died in 1989. He earned a bachelor's degree from the University of North Carolina in 1918 and an LLB from Harvard University in 1923.
